Method Step 1: The students were divided into two groups. They were also given some time to get used to using either an ED or a PD. Then they practiced looking up the words of List A. Step 2: PD students were given copies of List A while ED students copies of List B. They were asked to look up each word in order. Upon finishing the list, he/she raised her hand and the time taken was then recorded. Step 3: The two groups changed their places. Results Average look-up time for ten words: Using a PD: 168 seconds Using an ED: 130 seconds Conclusion Looking up words with an ED is about 23% faster than with a PD. Project 一、 1. F 2. F 3. T 4. The research found that people who used mobile phones were two and a half times more likely to have a brain tumour. 3. The study shows that the mice that were exposed to radiation had more than twice the cancer rate of those that did not receive any radiation. 4. Dr Alan Harris was a scientist at the Walter and Eliza Institute in Melbourne. 5. Because some people think that humans and mice are very different, therefore the evident from the experiment is not valid and does not prove anything. 6. The amount of profit involved in both cigarette and mobile phone industry is really enormous. If they make people know about the dangers, it will do great harm to their business. 三、 1~5 ACCDD 6~10 ABCAC Self-assessment 一、 1. familiar 2. convenience 3. personally 4. portable 5. patent 6. advancement 7. guarantee 8. merely 9. suitable 10. variety 二、 1~5 BDCDB 6~10 BCDAC 11~15 CCCAD 三、 1. know ? known 2. inform ? informed 3. until前加not 4. consider后加it 5. surprising ? surprised 6. in ? of 7. for ? by 8. 去掉means前的the 9. necessary ? necessarily 10. worried ? worrying 四、 1. finish/should finish 2. worrying 3. reducing 4. exposing 5. being exposed 6. are shaped 7. Now more new type electrical household appliances have entered millions of homes. We can enjoy a concert from DVD at home with an AV system instead of only listening to it from the radio or a recorder. It's a wonderful entertainment, which saves us much time going to and from a concert hall. P.C. has become a must to people, young and old. With its help, we can learn nearly everything at home and abroad, in the past and at present. It's a great pleasure. Mobile phones make it possible for us to talk to one whom we want to talk to at times we are out. It's convenient for communication among people indeed. Air-conditioners, which bring not only coolness in hot summer but warmth in cold winter, take the place of electric fans in a good number of homes. In a word, new electrical home appliances with modern technology make our daily life more convenient, more comfortable and more pleasant.
