三、 The Look-up Speed Experiment
Objective To know how quickly students could find the definition(s) of an unknown word by using two different kinds of dictionaries.
Method Step 1: The students were divided into two groups.
They were also given some time to get used to using either an ED or a PD. Then they practiced looking up the words of List A.
Step 2: PD students were given copies of List A while ED students copies of List B. They were asked to look up each word in order. Upon finishing the list, he/she raised her hand and the time taken was then recorded.
Step 3: The two groups changed their places.
Results Average look-up time for ten words:
Using a PD: 168 seconds
Using an ED: 130 seconds
Conclusion Looking up words with an ED is about 23% faster than with a PD.
